Coast Guard personnel assigned to Stations Yaquina Bay, Depoe Bay, Tillamook Bay, Umpqua River, Siuslaw Bay, and Sector North Bend located in the Pacific Area alongside coastal Oregon waters can complete the first two years of a bachelor's degree program by taking courses offered on-site by instructors approved by Vincennes University of Indiana. Associate of Science Degrees can be earned through taking courses in the evening hours after a regular duty day. Classes are from 3:30-6:30 OR 5:30 - 8:30 MTWTH or specially arranged and cover 45 hours of instruction for a 3 hour course. Laboratory assignments in Life Science, Chemistry, and Physics are completed through Newport Oregon High School. Forty [43] students have graduated with their A.S. Degrees since the programs began in 2002. Many of our graduates are now working toward their bachelor's degree at other accredited institutions. Seven have graduated with their B.A. Degrees and four are now working on their Master's Degrees.
The program has been expanded to include USCGC MIDGETT [Deployed], USCGC HENRY BLAKE, and work is underway to bring the program to USCGC Dallas homeported in South Carolina and the USCGC Icebreakers homeported in Seattle.
Classes have begun in the ATLANTICAREA at MLS Oregon Inlet and Cape Hatteras on the Outer Banks in North Carolina. These classes are taught with the assistance of the IHETS Interactive Classroom BREEZE technology wherein students can communicate directly with the instructor during class time. All assignments are sent e-mail for evaluation.
